Summary of "How to Tame a Wild Tongue"

The writer wanted to show how his people (the Chicanos) are despised because of their language, and how he struggles to fit into America, the "mainstream", and how he wanted retain his own language because it is a part of who he is. He was exposed to Spanish when he was young, but that type of Spanish is not what people regard as "real" Spanish, it was seen as a slang. Moreover, he told us how he picked up different language, for example,  he picked up standard working class English when he was in school and Chicano Texas Spanish when he speaks with his family members to show how much Chicanos have to learn in order fit into the diverse cultures. He also expressed that his identity value is kind of in a grey area because he doesn't belong with neither the Anglo-american values nor the Mexican cultural values. At the end, he said that he will patiently wait for the day when he can take pride in his language, as well as his identity.
