Intro

Hook:

Winter is almost here, another long holiday for vacations to stay away from the cold. Imagine your whole family go on a cruise round the Pacific Ocean. You are sitting on the deck, enjoying the sunlight, the beautiful blue sky and the seemingly endless ocean when suddenly a gut wrenching, disgusting smell hits you. You look over the deck and saw a pile of trash in the middle of the ocean. Yep, that's the Pacific garbage patch.

Motive: 

The Pacific Garbage Patch, also known as the "North Pacific Gyre" or "Pacific trash vortex", is an expanse of trash[, mostly plastic] that's accumulated in the North Pacific Ocean. It has been reported that it is "twice the size of Texas and is now floating hundreds of miles off the coasts of California and Hawaii."(Wikipedia). It's an often overlooked problem because it's one of those things that doesn't affect people immediately but it influences a whole lot of things in the long term. The Pacific garbage has been predicted in 1988 and has been discovered for about 2 decades now, it's a huge problem yet most people doesn't even know its existence. Some people think that government can just send ships out there and scoop up the plastics and everything will be back to normal. No, the Pacific Garbage has a lot more to that.

Thesis: I think that the general public should be more educated regarding the matter of Pacific Garbage Patch because it can greatly affect marine life and eventually, all living organisms on the planet.

Rewriting conclusion of project one

In conclusion, I think the director has managed to prove a point and it is that being mentally retarded can help you get away with almost anything, but on the other hand, can cause you to lose a lot of other things, like losing custody of his/her children, which can be an important part in people’s life.  However, being mentally retarded is not a choice. Some people are more unfortunate than others; therefore, although this show is ridiculous and is unreasonable in many different ways, it helped to raise awareness of how people with mental retardation are living their lives and encourage us to think of ways in helping them by showing how metal retardation affect a person's life. In addition, it is an honor to be supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and help them develop their own unique talent and skills.

Ideas for Project

Summary of "Body in Trouble"

Nancy writes how how she is seen as and feel as a disabled person and how certain words rob her of her ability to be a good woman. As a disabled person, she questions why good physical strength and posture relates to good morals, such as, keep your chin up means having courage, while bad physical vigor relates to bad morals, like, sit on your ass means laziness. She also mentioned how she is looked (not looked) by other people as she is confined by a wheelchair. Moreover, she expressed that she doesn't want her moral life to be drag down by her appearance and physical constraints, and that she and many other just want to be accepted in the world.

Summary of "How to Tame a Wild Tongue"

The writer wanted to show how his people (the Chicanos) are despised because of their language, and how he struggles to fit into America, the "mainstream", and how he wanted retain his own language because it is a part of who he is. He was exposed to Spanish when he was young, but that type of Spanish is not what people regard as "real" Spanish, it was seen as a slang. Moreover, he told us how he picked up different language, for example,  he picked up standard working class English when he was in school and Chicano Texas Spanish when he speaks with his family members to show how much Chicanos have to learn in order fit into the diverse cultures.He also expressed that his identity value is kind of in a grey area because he doesn't belong with neither the Anglo-american values nor the Mexican cultural values. At the end, he said that he will patiently wait for the day when he can take pride in his language, as well as his identity.

Summary of "If Black English Isn't a Language, Then Tell Me, What Is?"

This essay by James Baldwin talks about how language are not merely used for communication, it can be used to classify people with different social backgrounds and class, moreover, it can be used as a tool to judge people based on their accents. He used examples like how people in England talk make sense to their own people and not everyone else to demonstrate his thought of why Black English is not recognized as a real language. The reason is that Black English is creation of the black diaspora. In addition, he thinks that white man never meant to teach the Blacks English, the sole purpose of it was for the blacks to understand with the white people are saying so they can serve the white people. That is also the reason why he thinks black child are lost is that children can't be taught by people who despise them.

Analyzing "Prison Studies"

The thesis of "Prison Studies" is to say why he wanted to learn and his method of learning because he wanted to inspire people to learn. The ethos used here is how he prepared himself for the transformation from an inmate to a religious activist and civil leader. He also stated how his life has changed since he picked up reading. He is now a bookworm(in a good way) and reads as much as eh can due to his love for learning. Logos are presented in the article. He brought up definitions from the dictionary and mentioned how many hours he devoted to reading. Pathos here are not clearly shown. But i think how his attitude change as he reads more and more counts. He became more knowledgeable and wanted to spend more and more time reading as he wanted to broaden his horizon and expand his universe of knowledge.

Commercial Analysis

Home Insurance - "The Chicken" Commercial

This is an insurance commercial for Squareone insurance.

Logos: They presented their website at the end of the advertisement. Even though the main point (buy their insurance) is not clearly stated in the beginning of the video, at the end, they start going back to their main purpose. The line "You know what you need, why pay for what you don't?" urges you to go over their website and buy the insurance you need.

Pathos: The advertisement is demonstrated in a funny way. It also starred chicken (which enhances the funny-meter of the situation). They present a situation in which many people have gone through and this helps to appeal to other people's emotions. 

Ethos: Actors Adam Harper and Jerry Colpitts are starred in the commercial and this raises credibility. 

The summary of “They treat girls differently, don't they?”

The article revolves around the topic of gender bias -- its implications and solutions. Gender bias is rooted deeply in the American educational system even though some teachers and parents think it's misleading. You can tell that boys get more attention than girls starting from preschool because boys are called out more often and received constructive criticism more. On the other hand, girls are praised for things aside from their creativity or confidence and are discouraged to stand up for their ideas. This behavior hurts girls, making them less confident and leaves them feeling inferior, which may trick them into thinking that they can't do as much as they really can while fueling boys with confidence, leaving them feeling superior for some extent. Teachers are not to be blamed as they don't realize the situation. The problem is that girls are taught and conditioned to be more obedient and not progressive. However, some think gender bias do not exist. For example,Diane Ravithch, former assistant secretary of US department of education and present researcher at NewYork university, doesn't think gender bias exist as the number of girls entering college and taking up “boy subjects”increased throughout the years. Parents can help to raise the level of confidence in girls through educating their daughters about gender equality while teachers should guarantee every student get equal opportunity in expressing themselves.
